Pessoa snaffles always feature a fixed top ring to which the cheekpieces are attached. Below this sits a larger ring with one or two additional rings. Depending on where the reins are attached, the effect of the snaffle can be adjusted significantly.

The lower the reins are attached, the more lifting and supporting effect is created, with increased pressure on the corners of the mouth and, to a certain extent, the poll. When the reins are attached higher up, the snaffle generally works in a milder and more direct way. This makes the Pessoa snaffle popular with riders who want the flexibility to switch between basic contact and extra support when needed.
